In this case, it has taken sustainable urban development seen from the perspective of the intermediate city in Latin America, a typology of town with features that go beyond its size , it refers more to the intermediary role that it meets within the region to which it belongs. In the beginning, the article discusses the problems that arise with urban growth and the impact it generates, also, the role of intermediate cities in the phenomenon of urban concentration. The features, benefits and challenges of intermediate cities are presented. They talk about the urgency of change of approach required for understanding the city as a system, likewise, sustainable urban development strategies and their characteristics are presented . Finally , the Proposal for the Sustainability of the City Intermediate PSCI is explained by its seven ( 7) criteria: Brokerage , Compactness , Efficiency , Livability , Mobility, Governance, and Citizen Participation ; and the most relevant conclusions. Este artículo hace parte de la investigación llevada a cabo en la tesis doctoral de la autora y es tema de investigación actualmente en la Universidad de la Salle. Para este caso, se ha tomado el desarrollo urbano sostenible visto desde la óptica de la ciudad intermedia de América Latina, una tipología de ciudad con características que trascienden más allá de su talla, se refiere más bien al rol de intermediación que esta cumple dentro de la región a la cual pertenece. En sus inicios, el artículo plantea las problemáticas que se presentan con el crecimiento urbano y los impactos que este genera, así mismo, el papel de las ciudades intermedias en el fenómeno de concentración urbana. Se presentan las características, ventajas y desafíos de las ciudades intermedias. Se habla acerca de la urgencia del cambio de enfoque requerido para la comprensión de la ciudad como sistema, así mismo, se presentan estrategias de desarrollo urbano sostenible y sus características. Finalmente, se explica la Propuesta para la Sostenibilidad de la Ciudad Intermedia PSCI mediante sus siete (7) criterios: Intermediación, Compacidad, Eficiencia, Habitabilidad, Movilidad, Gobernabilidad, y Participación ciudadana; y se presentan las conclusiones más relevantes.
