To serve that purpose, the article presents various certifications granted throughout the world to help the professionals above mentioned to put up “green” structures; other specifications for building materials to be considered “sustainable”; and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) techniques to analyze constructions’ cradle-to-grave behavior, for measuring building’s environmental impact as well as corroborating its sustainability. Las condiciones medioambientales actuales exigen la revisión del ejercicio profesional en el campo de la arquitectura, el urbanismo y la construcción. En el artículo se presentan: los sistemas de certificación de construcciones sostenibles desarrollados en diversas regiones del mundo, herramientas que ayudan a los profesionales mencionados a acometer la tarea de producir construcciones “verdes”; las características que deben tener los materiales de construcción para considerarlos sostenibles, y los sistemas para evaluar el ciclo de vida de las edificaciones LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), herramienta para la medición del impacto ambiental de las edificaciones y su verificación en términos de sostenibilidad.
