It begins by providing a brief recollection of how the history of product design has been addressed over the years, followed by pairing up the most widespread points of view of design historians, mainly American and English, with some histories of industrial design written in Latin America and, particularly, in Colombia. It concludes that the impact of local product design in Colombian society is an issue that deserves more thorough research, to which a complete survey of companies, designers and production is essential. El artículo hace una revisión de la historiografía del diseño industrial a nivel mundial, latinoamericano y colombiano. En la primera parte presenta un breve recuento de la evolución en las maneras de abordar la historia del diseño industrial, y en la segunda, se relacionan de manera general los distintos enfoques utilizados por los historiadores del diseño (estadounidenses e ingleses principalmente) con algunas de las historias del diseño industrial escritas en América Latina, y específicamente, en Colombia. Se concluye que el impacto en la sociedad colombiana del diseño industrial local, es un tema que amerita investigaciones más profundas, y para lograrlo, es necesario un estudio completo de las empresas, los diseñadores y su producción.
