The example employed for this purpose represents the paradoxical convergence of Julio Cano Lasso´s urban approaches in defense of the traditional city, and the principles of American disurbanism. This convergence is expressed in the Tres Cantos urban development project to the north of Madrid.In this urban plan, a fishbone-shaped typology is adopted as established by Hilberseimer in his "settlement units", which would serve both to restructure American cities and create new suburban regions along the interstate highway system.Using Hilberseimer's typology as a structural foundation, the Madrid-born architect Julio Cano Lasso produced a hybrid with other typologies of European urban heritage. He achieved the synthesis of two antagonistic traditions, thereby exemplifying the ability of typological hybridization to vary or even completely subvert the characteristics of an urban typology without losing its essential identity. Este texto ilustra las posibilidades que ofrece para el planeamiento urbano una herramienta ampliamente utilizada en el proyecto arquitectónico: la tipología. El ejemplo empleado para este fin representa la paradójica convergencia de los planteamientos urbanos en defensa de la ciudad tradicional propios de Julio Cano Lasso, y los postulados del desurbanismo americano. Dicha confluencia se plasma en el proyecto urbanístico de Tres Cantos, al Norte de Madrid.En este plan urbanístico, se asume el tipo en espina de pez fijado por Hilberseimer en las "settlement units" que servirían, tanto para la reestructuración de ciudades norteamericanas, como para la creación de nuevas regiones suburbanas a lo largo del sistema interestatal de autopistas.Partiendo del tipo de Hilberseimer como base estructural, el arquitecto madrileño produce una hibridación con otros provenientes del acervo urbano europeo y obtiene la síntesis de dos tradiciones antagónicas, ejemplificando con ello la capacidad de la hibridación tipológica para variar o incluso subvertir completamente las características de un tipo urbano, sin que éste pierda su identidad esencial.
