| Zusammenfassung: | The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence a vertical envelope ́s material has on the availability of natural light in urban settings representative of the city of Concepción, in order to know the potential of these materials to provide natural light. The methodology was based on the selection of case studies from the historic Concepción downtown to build simplified models according to their height/width ratio (H/W). In each case, façade materials with greater presence in the urban canyon were chosen to calculate their reflectance and use in the simulated settings. The results show that the availability of exterior natural light is directly conditioned by the geometric relationship of the urban canyon, which decreases as the H/W ratio increases. It was confirmed that the lighting contribution from the reflection coefficient of the façade ́s material is greater as the H/W ratio increases, that is to say, the greater the density of the urban canyon, the greater the importance of the reflective properties of the façade materials with regards to the availability of natural light.
