Summary:The river Almendares has been strongly related to the development of Havana city since its foundation until present times, not only as the main source of water for its citizens, but also as an important natural limit that has influenced the process of urbanization and communication inside the territory of the capital city.This article is the result of a research work that analyses the significance of the river Almendares in the urban evolution of Havana city, with the aim of putting forward the value of the heritage zones next to the river as a key stage for establishing a strategy for their preservation.
