This project in Antofagasta seeks to recuperate the coastal border of the city through a series of interventions that tries to improve the accessibility of the inhabitants to the sea; to decontaminate various places of the coast, and to create a new coastal avenue.Due to its rocky nature, the coast of the city lacks of natural beaches, so the local authorities in charge of urban development started in 2000 with the idea of providing the city with three large artificial beaches. In order to achieve this task, the project included the construction of coastal defenses and the filling of some parts with sand, with interesting environmental benefits. El proyecto de Playas Artificiales para Antofagasta, es parte de Plan Bicentenario bajo el cual se está aplicando en varias ciudades un programa general de mejoramiento de condiciones de habitabilidad que tiene como fecha de culminación el año 2010. En Antofagasta uno de los proyectos, ha sido la recuperación del borde costero de la ciudad a través de un conjunto de obras que buscan lograr una mayor accesibilidad al mar para la población, la descontaminación de varios puntos del litoral y la ejecución de una nueva avenida costanera.El litoral, por su naturaleza rocosa carece de playas naturales por lo que a partir del año 2000 las autoridades a cargo del desarrollo urbano, asumieron la tarea de dotar a la ciudad de tres grandes playas artificiales. Para lograr su propósito se construyeron defensas costeras, se hicieron desrocados y se rellenó algunos sectores con arena de empréstito, con interesantes logros ambientales.
