Isabel Ascuí Fernández, Hernán Díaz Tejada, Jorge turismo transporte urbano vehículos tourism urban transport vehicles As in many countries around the world, utilitarian goals have usually been the leading consideration in Chile for policies in public transportation; that is: to increase the efficiency of transportation linkages between home, work, and public facilities (e.g. health, educational, etc.). This criterion is consistent with the mandate to public administrators of optimizing public resources. It has however, missed the chance of using part of the substantial resources allocated in the transportation sector, as a way of promoting people's involvement in culture, sport and recreational activities. That is, by designing linkages tonatural areas (with tourist and recreational potential), as another main goal of the publictransportation network. Following the latter approach, the article indetifies opportunities to incorporate natural landscape appreciation as a part of the daily urban experience, in the city of Concepción; through a network of cycling- paths, adapted for small vehicles moved by human power (pedicabs). En Chile, como en muchos países del mundo, el sistema público de transporte ha sido históricamente concebido desde un punto de vista estrictamente utilitario. Es decir, en términos de su eficiencia para enlazar el hogar y el trabajo; el hogar con el lugar de estudios, etc. Estre criterio - que se explica fundamentalmente por la necesidad de optimizar los recursos públicos - deja sin embargo de lado la oportunidad de que el transporte se constituya también en un medio para fortalecer la cultura, el deporte y la salud de las personas; a través del esparcimiento y de la actividad física. Esto se lograría por ejemplo, concibiendo -o adaptando -las infraestructuras de transporte público para que enlacen lugares atractivos desde el punto de vista turístico y recreativo. Utilizando el caso de la ciudad de Concepción, el artículo analiza el potencial de esta ciudad para incorporar el paisaje a la experiencia urbana a través de un sistema de ciclo-rutas turístico/patrimoniales aptas para vehículos livianos no motorizados (tipo pedicabs).
