A model is proposed that links the communities of Chiloé and its temples with the tourists. The analysis focuses on maturity levels, defined as the disposition for living with tourism in a deep and integral way, as the model’s backbone variable. Thus, both inhabitants and tourists, as well as the institutions and tourism activities involved, can vary in their maturity levels. It is conjectured that the encounter between “mature” communities and tourists would be optimal if the tourist activities were of a high level, defined as cultured tourism. If, on the other hand, both the “Chilotes” and the tourists are immature, while lacking the fullness of cultured tourism, there are few frustrated expectations. In contrast, when there are dissimilar levels of maturity between inhabitant and tourist a much greater degree of frustration arises. En la relación de las comunidades con la arquitectura merece especial atención el turismo, tanto en su posibilidad de amenaza como de oportunidad para la cultura religiosa y su expresión arquitectónica. Se propone un modelo que relaciona las comunidades de Chiloé y sus templos con los turistas, centrando el análisis en los niveles de madurez como variable vertebradora del modelo y definida como la disposición para vivir con integridad y profundidad el evento turístico. Así tanto los habitantes como los turistas pueden variar su nivel de madurez como también las instituciones y los eventos involucrados. Se conjetura que el encuentro entre comunidades “maduras” con turistas de igual condición sería óptimo si además el evento corresponde a un buen nivel, definido como turismo culto. En la situación en que tanto el chilote como el turista son inmaduros, si bien no tiene la plenitud del turismo culto, no hay un alto nivel de expectativas que resulte frustrado aunque el encuentro sea estereotipado y con cierto grado de superficialidad, en cambio cuando hay dispares niveles de madurez entre turista y el chilote, el nivel de frustración es de mayor magnitud.
