These plazas are places of social encounter and points of anchorage deeply embedded in the southern landscapes, adapting to the rigorous climate and revealing cultural values that allude to the historical processes of colonization. The shape of the plazas and their main elements bring together qualities that reflect classic urban intentions while also declaring the will to acknowledge the unique characteristics of each specific site. Las cinco plazas analizadas en este artículo (plazas de Puyuhuapi, Puerto Cisnes, Puerto Ibáñez, Bahía Murta y Punta Arenas) son la expresión viva y visible de la identidad que día a día se construye en los hermosos, lejanos y aislados territorios de la Patagonia chilena. Estas plazas son lugares de encuentro social y constituyen los principales anclajes del arraigo a los paisajes australes porque se adaptan al rigor del clima y revelan valores culturales alusivos a los procesos históricos de colonización. En la forma de las plazas y de sus principales elementos convergen cualidades que reflejan intenciones urbanísticas clásicas y, al mismo tiempo, enuncian la voluntad de reconocer las características propias de cada sitio específico.
