The city was built in the bay of Lota as a base settlement from which to exploit undersea coal deposits. Its urban image is defined by the social housing blocks (‘pabellones’), the community ovens, the industrial area with its high chimneys and lift shafts leading down into the mines, the wharf and the park. Lota es una de las ciudades más emblemáticas de Chile por su significado cultural y su historia directamente relacionada con los cambios sociales y territoriales impulsados por la minería del carbón. La ciudad fue construida en la bahía de Lota como asentamiento base para explotar los yacimientos carboníferos submarinos y su imagen urbana se identifica con los volúmenes de vivienda colectiva conocidos como pabellones, los hornos comunes, su área industrial donde sobresalen las altas siluetas de chimeneas y torres de los piques -ascensores que conducen a las minas, el muelle y su parque.
