Summary:Understanding the city, as a holistic matter requires including the multiplicity of issues involved which bestow it with a systemic sense. Urban fabric is composed of public space, social fabric, and citizens' behaviours. This article debates the rights to contemporary public space based on a teaching experience developed in the Urban Design 3 course at the School of Architecture, Universidad de Chile (autumnsemester 2011), integrating urban design asa discipline. The recognition of metropolitan neighbourhoods located around Mapocho waterway (CFM) is done, showing a different situation between its east and west sides. Themain conclusion of this academic experience is that the unitary image of CFM and the articulation of its common areas is a major challenge that is still pending.
