Los primeros crecimientos significativos de los cascos urbanos de las ciudades de América del Sur, se producen a fines del siglo XIX. Hasta ese momento las transformaciones físicas se habían desarrollado bajo el patrón y las morfologías de la urbanística colonial. Esta situación motiva la participación destacada de importantes urbanistas del Viejo Mundo, que aplicaron en su quehacer americano las teorías y prácticas presentes en ese momento en Europa.
