This situation encouraged urban planners from the old world to participate in the urban development of South America. They applied European theories and models to the local realities. Los primeros crecimientos significativos de los cascos urbanos de las ciudades de América del Sur, se producen a fines del siglo XIX. Hasta ese momento las transformaciones físicas se habían desarrollado bajo el patrón y las morfologías de la urbanística colonial. Esta situación motiva la participación destacada de importantes urbanistas del Viejo Mundo, que aplicaron en su quehacer americano las teorías y prácticas presentes en ese momento en Europa.
