Cabrera Vergara, Maria Over recent decades, container architecture –also known as cargotecture– has generated recurrent and controversial debates. Many consider it as a temporary practice, somehow outmoded today, while others do not even recognize it as a form of architecture. However, this is a paradigmatic contemporary architectural practice that emerged with the desire of providing with an alternative to the traditional architectural forms, and it has given rise to the emergence of some unique and ground breaking solutions. Despite being controversial, and often overlooked, paradoxically container architecture does offer important lessons regarding key architectural issues, among which precisely stands out a new understanding of collective architecture.
