The means of transportation have shaped cities as an adaptation to the times. Nowadays, this understanding has to be linked to the spatial conception of the project and the large spans, since they constitute the field of experimentation, in which the seeds of a new urbanism is found. Thus, the large spans have to be taken into consideration as a means to achieve the new urban concepts, since they are an indissociable project resource of our time. A brief tour of some projects in recent years can offer us an image of the panorama of change in which we are, and of its feasibility, since each of the project is in itself a prototype of what the city could become. En los albores del siglo XXI, con los medios técnicos disponibles, es necesario reflexionar sobre cómo entendemos la ciudad. Los medios de transporte han modelado las ciudades, como una adaptación a los tiempos. Este entendimiento hoy ha de ir ligado a la concepción espacial del proyecto y las grandes luces, ya que constituyen el ámbito de experimentación en el que se encuentra el germen de un nuevo urbanismo. Así las grandes luces han de tenerse en consideración, como medio para la consecución de los nuevos conceptos urbanos, ya que son un recurso proyectual indisociable de nuestro tiempo. Un breve recorrido por algunos proyectos de los últimos años, pueden ofrecernos una imagen del panorama de cambio en el que nos encontramos y si éste es viable, ya que cada uno de los proyectos es de por sí un prototipo de lo que podría llegar a ser la ciudad. * El artículo forma parte de la tesis doctoral del autor, desarrollada en la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Madrid, España.
