Presentation: Sustainability and Development of Human Settlements and Housing in Chile Encuentro Nacional: Hábitat II. This paper is the introductory presentation of the topic: Sustainability and Development of Human Settlements and Housing in Chile, at the II National Habitat Meeting, held in October 1995. Given the strong economic growth experienced by Chile, several parts of the Chilean society have shown concern as regards the insufficient achievements in the areas of social equity and environmental preservation when considering the conditions for a sustainable development. Alter an introduction to the topic of quality, the implications of the concepts of life quality and environment are stated and their connections to the problems of human settlements are stablished together with the meaning of a sustainable city, the great contradictions existing in our country are illustrated through the example of Santiago.
