The hypothesis being that such illegal squatters are originally the result of a social movement, which then becomes political and is essentially different to other initiatives by the homeless in their search for a solution to their housing problem. This has meant the creation of settlements in the outskirts of the city. El presente artículo da cuenta del proceso de tomas de terreno organizadas, que dieron origen a la formación de campamentos en Santiago de Chile, durante las décadas 60 y 70, planteando la hipótesis de que los señalados campamentos surgen, en su origen producto de un movimiento social, que luego se transforma en político y que difiere substancialmente de otras iniciativas de los sin casa, en la búsqueda de soluciones al problema habitacional, marcando un poblamiento hacia las periferias de la ciudad.
