Increasingly, citizen participation represents a requirement in decision making processes and it is widely demonstrated that people's participation is fundamental to sustain development in the long term. However, participatory processes and mainly citizen participation still do not acquire a dominant role in city management. This article mainly reflects on processes of urban development particularly in relation to citizens´ role in the planning and implementation of renewal and regeneration strategies leading to recover the lost liveability of urban spaces. This paper argues that, it is necessary a citizenship profoundly involved in the problems of their environment, in the different actions that lead to solutions and the satisfaction of needs, and in general in the configuration of a sustainable urban development. En la actualidad, en las sociedades democráticas, la participación ciudadana es un elemento esencial en los procesos de desarrollo urbano. Cada vez es más frecuente, la participación de la ciudadanía como requisito en la toma de decisiones y se va demostrando ampliamente que la participación de la gente es fundamental para el sostenimiento del desarrollo en el largo plazo. Sin embargo, los procesos participativos y principalmente la participación de la gente todavía no adquieren un papel dominante en la gestión de las ciudades. Este artículo reflexiona sobre procesos de desarrollo y diseño urbano específicamente en relación al papel de los ciudadanos en la planeación e implementación de estrategias de renovación y regeneración que conduzcan a la recuperación de la habitabilidad perdida en los espacios urbanos. Este artículo argumenta que, es necesaria una ciudadanía profundamente involucrada en la problemática de su entorno, en las diversas acciones que conllevan a la solución de problemas, en la satisfacción de necesidades y en general en la conformación de un desarrollo urbano sostenible.
