It is taken as a foundation for the elaboration of new proposals to improve the policies, programs and/or projects. It is proposed that an efficient handling of the information supports the process of public-private decision making in respect to the planning and intervention of the residential habitat that, strengthens the citizens and allows a better social control of its management and administration. The information concepts and information systems are presented in a context of a well informed society in relation how wide spread are the information technologies and knowledge (TIC). This discussion was taken as a starting point to develop the structure of a Housing Information System for its implementation. It also accounts the current knowledge advance generated by the INVI. It organizes and gives perspective to the academic work, making it coherent with the Strategic Plan for institutional development. Se argumenta que el manejo adecuado, y oportuno de información, ya sea a modo de conocimiento y/o comunicación, permite la mayor comprensión de los problemas asociados al hábitat residencial, y otorga respuestas adecuadas a dichos problemas. Ello, como base para la elaboración de nuevas propuestas de mejoramiento de políticas, programas y/o proyectos. Se postula que el manejo eficiente de la información, apoya el proceso de toma de decisiones públicas - privadas respecto a la planificación e intervención del hábitat residencial; con ello, fortalece la ciudadanía y faculta el mayor control social de la gestión y administración. Se exponen los conceptos de información, y sistemas de información en un contexto de sociedad informacional, y la relación con la masificación de las tecnologías de información y del conocimiento (TIC). A partir de dicha discusión, se desarrolla la estructura de un Sistema de Información en Vivienda para su implementación, dando cuenta del estado de avance del conocimiento generado por el INVI, organizando y perspectivando el quehacer académico, coherente con el Plan Estratégico de desarrollo institucional.
