Özet:Within the long housing history in Chile, the topic of the improvement of shantytown, either by public action or by the action of the communities concerned, has been subject of extensive research. This paper aims at exactly the opposite that is to reflect the reality in shantytowns in Valparaiso, before state intervention and in some cases in spite of state intervention. Poverty in human habitat is a complex topic and therefore only the aspects that can be tackled from urbanism were taken into account by viewing the reality of the settlement’s physical milieu. Some equally important aspects, such as the sociological ones, were left for further research. This paper aims at presenting a summary of the concluding chapter, the one that analyses the type of settlements. This was done by categorizing poverty in twenty-five shantytowns settled along the Camino Cintura (Cintura Road).
