Its incorporation in discussions related to public policy, programmes and projects has been considerable. In Chile, over the past ten years, this approach has increasingly been gaining relevance and becoming better known. However, this does not mean that the subject matter is accepted and even less incorporated into every day practice in territorial or human settlements interventions as that there are still confusions regarding its meaning, origin and framework, possible benefits and forms of application. This paper is based on the methodology applied in a research on the institutionalization of gender in human settlement in Chile and it concentrates on three main dimensions: the existing knowledge on the subject, its operationlisation and finally on the conditions for its institutionalisation. Es posible constatar que a nivel internacional, particularmente en las agencias internacionales y en ámbitos académicos, la perspectiva de género es un enfoque que pocos desconocen y muchos consideran relevante. El avance que ha tenido el tema en las discusiones en variados ámbitos de políticas públicas, proyectos y programas a nivel mundial es considerable. En Chile, en los últimos diez años, la temática de género ha ido cobrando relevancia cada vez más y menor desconocimiento. Sin embargo, esto no significa que sea un tema aceptado y muchos menos incorporado a la práctica cotidiana de las intervenciones relacionadas con el territorio y los asentamientos humanos ya que se perciben profundas confusiones respecto a su significado, origen y enfoque al cual se adhiere, posibles beneficios y formas de aplicación. El trabajo se basa en los resultados de una investigación sobre la Institucionalización del género en los Asentamientos Humanos en Chile y se centra en tres principales dimensiones: el conocimiento del tema, sobre la operacionalización del mismo y finalmente, sobre las condicionantes para su institucionalización.
