Summary:This article is the result of research carried out during the second year of doctorate Periphery, Sustainability and Urban Vitality at the Higher Technical School of Architecture, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Its purpose is to analyze the relationship between security of tenure and informal settlements in most of Latin American cities; it tries to answer the following research question: Can the implemented instruments in these countries guarantee tenure security for people living in informal settlements? To achieve this goal, we carried out a comparative study of national instruments in three different countries of Latin America: Brazil, Colombia and Peru.
