总结:In the early 20th century the Peruvian State promoted the construction of a great monument to José de San Martín in Lima, a project with a fluctuating and dilated progression. This work reviews that conjuncture from the public contest in 1904 and the controversial project of the Peruvian artist Carlos Baca-Flor, later assigned to the Spanish sculptor Mariano Benlliure, concluding with the delayed inauguration of the monument in the Plaza San Martín, in July 1921. For the analysis, the connotative burden of sculptural image in the public space, the demarcation of the presence of the State, and its discursive possibilities to reinforce an idea of “the nation” are considered. In this sense, the images of discarded projects and previous versions of the monument are also reviewed, in relation to the areas of “public sphere”, civil society, and political power groups. Also, it has considered the resignification of the image of San Martín in the context of the South American independence centenaries.
