总结:This article discusses the process by which the first suburban areas of the city of Santiago were established, between 1850 and 1936, fundamental instance for its transit from colonial settlement to a republican capital. The early urban growth, consisting in the densification of blocks and the prolongation of streets, as a single urban system, was replaced by another one, based on autonomous suburban operations, separated from the center, but connected to it and to the territory through roads and watercourses, defining a tension between center and periferies. This phenomenon was verified in two phases: one, when the foundational sector freed itself from the limits of the rural entourage, and expanded according to poles of growth, and the other when these suburbs became the form of growth, as well as the object of varied disciplining attempts, constitutive of the first urban plans. The latter were made possible thanks to the introduction of the urban map, and played a fundamental role in the definition of the general form of the city.
