description This article presents an overview of the earthen construction in La Rioja Province, Argentina, across four centuries. A heritage perspective introduces several sites and different typological buildings dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries. One valuable chapter is about religious heritage, mainly built with earth before the earthquake of 1894. Earthen architecture not only remains to the past. Its presence continues in the valley, and nowadays it is visible through many contemporary projects. On one hand, due to the reconversion of abandoned houses, into museums, libraries or lodging. On the other hand, through the construction of new buildings. All this turned the earthen construction into a sustainable alternative.

El presente artículo presenta una revisión de los casos representativos de la construcción con tierra en la Provincia de La Rioja, Argentina, a lo largo de cuatro siglos. Desde la perspectiva patrimonial se registran diversos bienes tipológicos, que datan de los siglos XVII al XX. Un apartado clave se conforma mediante el patrimonio religioso construido mayoritariamente con tierra, hasta el terremoto de 1894. La arquitectura de tierra no es algo que remite únicamente al pasado. Su presencia en la región continúa en los valles y actualmente se vislumbran diversas iniciativas proyectuales. Por un lado, mediante la refuncionalización de las viviendas existentes abandonadas y su reutilización como museos, bibliotecas o alojamientos turísticos. Por otro lado, a través de la ejecución de proyectos contemporáneos. Todas estas acciones proponen a la construcción con tierra como una alternativa sustentable.
