In the documents of the desinging process, belonging to the Segre archive, which is currently being studied and organized, there is an emphatic opposition from the architects to a sculpture of Che (a "true image" and "socialist realism", according to them) that the Municipality with wide popular support demanded to place in the square. To defend their opposition, Segre resorted to Che's own mid-20th century writings outlining the idea of the "new man". In addition, it shows the gap between avant-garde and mass, the analyzed episode allows an approach to the thought of the last years of Roberto Segre’s carrer, with recurring themes in his work.

En 2007, el crítico de arquitectura Roberto Segre (1934-2013) y los arquitectos José Antonio Choy y Claudio Vekstein fueron invitados por la Municipalidad de Rosario para elaborar el proyecto de una plaza memorial dedicada a Ernesto “Che” Guevara. En los documentos del proceso de diseño del archivo de Segre, que actualmente está siendo estudiado y organizado, se observa una enfática oposición de los arquitectos a una escultura del Che (según ellos una “imagen verídica” y “realista socialista”) que la Municipalidad con amplio apoyo popular exigía colocar en la plaza. Para defender esta oposición, Segre recurrió a los escritos de mediados del siglo XX del propio Che en los que se esboza la idea del “hombre nuevo”. Además de mostrar la brecha no superada entre vanguardia y masa, el episodio analizado permite realizar una aproximación al pensamiento de los últimos años de carrera de Roberto Segre frente a temas recurrentes de su obra.
