The architecture, particularly when considered in its external aspects, and open spaces of part of these condominiums present characteristics of French buildings and gardens, in such a way that they seem to be totally dissociated from their environs in the landscape. The choice of a French style in architecture and landscape architecture as a model or a pattern may be explained by the role played by property developers, building constructors, and housing market agents, by the persistence of eclecticism in the city of São Paulo as well as of the obsession with everything European – which Gilberto Freyre observed regarding the 19th century – and also by the association established in the social imagination between French icons and symbols of status and power.Key words: condominiums of São Paulo city, architectural and open space scenery, French infl uence. Este artigo tem como objetivo principal analisar a influência francesa na constituição do cenário arquitetônico-paisagístico dos conjuntos de edifícios residenciais construídos na cidade de São Paulo a partir de 1990. A arquitetura, especialmente quando considerada em seus aspectos externos, e os espaços livres de edificação de parte desses condomínios apresentam características da arquitetura e dos jardins franceses, de tal modo que aparecem dissociados do entorno na paisagem. Esse emprego do estilo arquitetônico e paisagístico francês enquanto modelo ou padrão pode ser explicado considerando-se o papel dos empreendedores imobiliários, a persistência do ecletismo na cidade de São Paulo e da obsessão por tudo que é europeu – constatada por Gilberto Freyre em relação ao século XIX – e a associação que se estabelece no imaginário social paulistano entre os ícones arquitetônicos e paisagísticos franceses e os símbolos de status e de poder.Palavras-chave: conjuntos de edifícios residenciais paulistanos, cenário arquitetônico-paisagístico, influência francesa.
