For this purpose, basic concepts of brise-soleil energy efficiency are presented. The paper is divided into four parts: initially, the evolution of solar protection systems is shown. Then the aesthetic dimension of solar protection systems is characterized. It is noted that there is a close relationship between the appreciation of the shape of solar protection devices and the emphasis on the dimension of technology in architecture. In the third part of the paper, basics concepts of energy efficiency are discussed and a case study of a hotel in Pelotas (RS, Brazil) is presented. Finally, some considerations emphasize the need for appreciating the aesthetic and energy dimensions of solar protection devices in the development of architectonic projects.Key words: solar protection, brise-soleil, energy efficiency and aesthetics. O objetivo deste artigo é discutir as dimensões estética e de efi ciência energética de sistemas de proteção solar contribuindo para a desmistifi cação da transposição metafórica do brise-soleil como um elemento pesado na composição de um edifício. Por outro lado, apresentam-se também conceitos básicos da efi ciência energética de sistemas de proteção solar. O artigo está dividido em quatro partes: inicialmente apresenta-se uma contextualização sobre a evolução compositiva dos sistemas de proteção solar. Posteriormente, caracteriza-se a dimensão estética do brise-soleil na atualidade. Verifi ca-se que existe uma relação muito estreita entre a valorização da forma dos sistemas de proteção solar e a ênfase da dimensão tecnológica na projetualidade da arquitetura em geral. Na terceira parte, caracterizam-se conceitos básicos da efi ciência energética e apresenta-se um estudo de caso da análise de viabilidade de implantação de um sistema de proteção solar em fachada oeste de um hotel na cidade de Pelotas (RS). Na última parte, apresentam-se as considerações fi nais destacando-se a necessidade de valorização das dimensões estética e de efi ciência energética dos sistemas de proteção solar no desenvolvimento de projetos de arquitetura.Palavras-chave: proteção solar, brise-soleil, efi ciência energética,estética.
