The tension between the creative capacity and the possibility of rationalizing the processes that account for the project is defining: it is necessary to state the hypotheses, inform the processes that will shape the type of intervention and the reasons behind it. The intervention of an existing structure usually proposes a way of understanding the project as a dialectic relation between what remains and what is incorporated, which may be well represented by the existence of a host and his guest. The history of the building is not only important for its values, but for the recognition of the production conditions, as a material and artistic work. It is, then, a biography inscribed in the very material of the building that must be unraveled for design purposes, and which lies in the constructive order that characterizes it and from which the parameters for the intervention emerge. The Olympic Pool of Arica can be a case whose interpretation contributes to the definition of how to intervene this type of heritage. Keywords: pre-existence, design hypothesis, sports structures, Olympic Pool of Arica En el campo de la intervención de obras preexistentes, ya no es posible eludir las decisiones fundamentadas. La tensión entre la capacidad creativa y la posibilidad de racionalizar los procesos que dan cuenta del proyecto resulta definitoria: es necesario enunciar las hipótesis, dar cuenta de los procesos que darán forma al tipo de intervención y las razones detrás de ella. La intervención en una obra existente propone habitualmente una manera de entender el proyecto como una dialéctica entre lo que permanece y lo que se incorpora, que bien puede representarse en la existencia de un anfitrión y su huésped. La historia de la obra no solo es importante por los valores, sino que por el reconocimiento de las condiciones de producción, en tanto obra material y artística. Se trata, entonces, de una biografía inscripta en la materia misma del edificio que debe ser desentrañada con fines proyectuales, y que reside en el orden constructivo que la caracteriza y del cual surgen los parámetros para la intervención. La Piscina Olímpica de Arica puede ser un caso cuya lectura aporte a la definición de cómo intervenir frente a este tipo de patrimonio.
