This context was characterized by the architect’s proximity or distance to the engineer. It identifies when the distinction between the two fields became pressing and shows how it represented an important strategy to guarantee a very personal national “character” of modern architecture in Rio de Janeiro and its specific program, more than merely to establish rights and obligations of each profession. The concern with the professional specificity, image and relevance helped strengthen the architectural profession at the end of the 1950s, a time when the construction of Brasília represented the highpoint of creativity and the plastic-formal “exceptionalness” of the architect of Rio de Janeiro. At the same time, the engineer became the architect’s provider of technical building expertise.Key words: academic teaching, professional field of architects, modern architecture in Rio de Janeiro. O artigo discorre sobre o contexto formativo e construtivo do arquiteto na virada dos séculos XIX-XX, caracterizando o que o aproximava ou afastava do engenheiro. Identifica quando se torna premente a distinção entre os dois campos e de que forma ela representará uma estratégia importante na garantia, mais do que apenas de direitos e deveres de cada um dos profissionais, de um “caráter” nacional personalíssimo à arquitetura moderna do Rio de Janeiro, permitindo-lhe a explicitação de seus objetivos. Será a preocupação com a especificidade, imagem e relevância da profissão que impulsionará o fortalecimento da classe até fins dos anos 1950, quando a construção de Brasília irá representar o ápice do atributo da criatividade e “excepcionalidade” plástico-formal do arquiteto carioca, assim como atestar e distinguir a complementaridade técnico-construtiva com que passou a lhe servir o engenheiro.Palavras-chave: ensino acadêmico, campo profissional do arquiteto, arquitetura moderna no Rio de Janeiro.
