description	The Brazilian landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx is a synonym of modern landscape construction. His projects, both in his private and urban interventions, have a number of traits that mark the beginning of a new era of landscape design in Brazil. Amongst its features are the use of free geometric shapes inspired by the cultural currents of the time – as the European avant-garde –, the emphasis on the tropicality of the country, the treatment of surfaces with colors and textures of coating plant species and his personal concept of public space linked with the city and the citizen. This text intends to think about these issues and identify them through a methodology which in detail considers his work process from the conception of the idea to its realization in the public space. Also, by walking through the interventions of Burle Marx in Rio de Janeiro, we will identify those cultural values that, on the one hand, define and distinguish them and, on the other, allow his interventions to be considered from the perspective of the public heritage.Key words: Rio de Janeiro, landscape, public space, intervention.

La figura del paisajista brasileño Roberto Burle Marx es sinónimo de construcción del paisaje moderno. Sus proyectos, tanto en el ámbito privado como en las intervenciones urbanas, poseen una serie de rasgos que marcan el inicio de una nueva etapa paisajística en Brasil. Entre sus características se encuentra el uso de formas geométricas libres inspiradas en las corrientes y temáticas de la época –como las vanguardias europeas–, el énfasis en la tropicalidad del país, el tratamiento de las superficies en función de los colores y texturas de revestimiento de las especies vegetales o su personal concepto del espacio público vinculado con la ciudad y con el individuo. Este texto ha querido profundizar en todas estas cuestiones, e identificarlas a través de una metodología que recoja detalladamente el proceso de trabajo del paisajista desde la gestación de la idea hasta su materialización en el espacio público. Asimismo, este recorrido por las intervenciones del paisajista en la ciudad carioca nos permitirá identificar aquellos valores culturales que, por un lado, las definen y singularizan y, por el otro, posibilitan que sean consideradas desde el ámbito patrimonial.Palabras clave: Rio de Janeiro, paisaje, espacio público, intervención.
