Description
Résumé:The cities that belong to the Campinas Metropolitan Region have been undergoing a process of  regionalization of their activities over the last two decades, with a direct impact on the structure of their urban fabric. The new urbanistic patterns derived from the processes of urban segregation, intensive migratory streams and physical conurbation among the cities have a strong effect on the appropriation of public spaces. These transformations affect the forms of public life, particularly the use and appropriation of public spaces. They reduce the public character of those spaces and de-characterize the buildings in traditional downtown areas by emptying them of their civic and recreational functions. This process is aggravated when they become objects of real estate speculation and social-spatial segregation. The article shows the patrimonial value that is inherent in the public spaces of the town of Valinhos that were historically constituted and determine its urban configuration. On the basis of a study of three public spaces of Valinhos related to different periods of the territory’s formation, it discusses the importance of treating them as preservation units, i.e. as centers of the so called “cultural interest zones”.Key words: public spaces, urban patrimony, preservation policies, urban administration, Valinhos, urbanism.
