The text describes how architecture holds a periodical sparkle to show the future that appears in cinema as the dream machine of the 20th century. Therefore, many commercial movies represent the city as a laboratory to create imaginary scenes showing the future. Ranging from magic to reality, the strange or simply impossible, the visual construction of the future city has created a large amount of images, seized by the members of the audience. Only a few of theses movies are acknowledged as cinematographically milestones, thanks to their transcendent originality. Key words: cities, movies, future, presentation. Este artículo revisa el conjunto de películas del género de la ciencia ficción y rescata dos ejemplos fílmicos, Bis ans Ende der Welt (1991) de Win Wenders y La sonámbula, recuerdos del futuro (1998) de Fernando Spiner, cuyos escenarios de ciudades futuras parecen contener un planteamiento vigente de hipótesis aún no develadas y, a la vez, son capaces de continuar explorando nuestro presente. En el texto se describe como la arquitectura posee una efervescencia periódica por mostrar el futuro que finalmente recae en el cine, como la máquina de los sueños del siglo XX. Por esto, numerosas películas comerciales moldearon a la ciudad como un laboratorio para crear novedosos espacios ficticios que denotaran ese tiempo venidero. Desde lo mágico a lo real, lo curioso o simplemente imposible, la construcción visual de la ciudad futura ocasionó un rico catastro de imágenes aprehendidas por el espectador. Sólo algunas de estas películas alcanzan a reconocerse como hitos cinematográficos, por su trascendente originalidad. Palabras clave: ciudad, cine, futuro, representación.
