Sáenz de Oíza, c. 1967-1977 de Lózar de la Viña, Miguel If the house, of course, lies in the center of any discussion about dwelling, the architect’s house will be, without any doubt, of special interest. Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza had the fortune of living a major part of his live in houses projected by himself. This was not the case, however, of his so many times drawn house in Oropesa, which was never built. When in 1992, already as professor emeritus, Oíza had to give a lectura about the house in Madrid’s School of Architecture, he did not talk about the houses where he had lived, nor the houses he had built for his clients, but decided to rescue from oblivion this small retreat, unknown to almost everyone. It was a small hut lost in the woods. Its minimal program was really adjusted in its dimensional development, and the construction techniques proposed molded this austere spirit of the house. However, the hut had a specific characteristic that stood out above the others: contrary to what might be expected, this was a vertical hut. With the graphic reconstruction and the analysis of this small piece of architecture, we will try to shed some light, to search for a particular meaning, for the intense and polyhedral architecture of a man who was some times accused of “drifting”, but who has always been complex and fascinating. Keywords: Oíza, modern hut, vertical hut, meaning, technique, modern architecture, retreat in Oropesa, Spanish architecture.
