Cities with urban architectural value in terms of heritage must be accessible to all people regardless of their physical and social condition. Despite the policy frameworks that promote the rights of persons with disabilities, when we confront the heritage legislation and the subject of physical accessibility, much remain to be done. The purpose of this paper is to present advancements and challenges on physical accessibility in tourist historic cities, focused on public policies, emphasizing in the cases of Mexico and Brazil. Note that advances in this area are emerging and the actions have been atomized. This theme requires institutional commitments as well as the actors involved in the conservation of the cultural heritage, in order to democratize the urban space and architectural heritage, including all in a safe environment that allows knowing and enjoying the cultural wealth of a nation. La accesibilidad, también llamada accesibilidad universal es el grado en que todas las personas pueden utilizar, visitar un lugar o acceder a un servicio independientemente de sus capacidades técnicas, cognitivas o físicas. Las ciudades con patrimonio urbano arquitectónico deben ser accesibles para todas las personas sin importar su condición física y social. A pesar de los marcos normativos que promueven los derechos de las personas con alguna discapacidad, cuando confrontamos la legislación patrimonial y el tema de la accesibilidad física, se observa que falta mucho al respecto. El objetivo de la comunicación es presentar los avances y retos existentes sobre políticas públicas relacionadas a la accesibilidad física en ciudades turísticas patrimoniales, enfatizando en los casos de México y Brasil. Se observa que los avances en esa materia son incipientes y las acciones han sido atomizadas. Este tema requiere compromisos institucionales y de los actores involucrados en la conservación del patrimonio cultural, para permitir democratizar el espacio urbanoarquitectónico patrimonial, incluyendo a todos en un ambiente seguro, que permita conocer y disfrutar de la riqueza cultural de una nación.
