The magnitude of these losses is equally related to the conjunction of factors such as seismicity, construction materials, soil deposits, geometry of the buildings, design regulations. While there is a study and understanding of physical phenomena linked to a seismic event in general, such as wave propagation in various media, dynamic response of building materials and soil deposits; there are typical aspects of each area that can magnify the impact that an earthquake has on a population. El impacto que genera en la sociedad las consecuencias derivadas de un evento sísmico, está asociado directamente a la evidencia de pérdidas materiales y humanas en las poblaciones. La magnitud de estas pérdidas a su vez, se relaciona a la conjunción de factores como sismicidad, materiales de construcción, depósitos de suelo, geometría de las construcciones, normativa de diseño. Si bien existe un estudio y entendimiento de los fenómenos físicos ligados a un evento sísmico en general, tales como propagación de ondas en diversos medios, respuesta dinámica de materiales de construcción y depósitos de suelos; existen aspectos típicos decada zona que pueden magnificar el impacto que un sismo presenta en una población.
