These effects had a number of significant impacts on the quality of urban life in Latin America, thus causing the decline of the “Right to the City” in San José. “Ciudad Alterna” means Alternate City. Ciudad Alterna is a group of architects who seek to encourage critical thinking about the current dehumanization surrounding urban dynamics through: disobedient action posed by tactical urbanism, guerrilla marketing, and small-scale urban intervention. Realizing the possibilities offered by these tools to reclaim the right to the city requires a direct democracy wherein citizens engage actively in the collective search for solutions regarding situations of social struggle, mobility, and the use and transformation public space in the city of San José, Costa Rica. La planificación urbana de corte tradicional, conocida en inglés con el término “top-down”, aunada a las políticas neoliberales de desarrollo urbano, produjeron una serie de fenómenos tales como: el surgimiento de nuevos centros urbanos, una efervescente cultura del miedo, la privatización del espacio público y ciudades diseñadas en función del automóvil. Dichos efectos tuvieron una serie de repercusiones en la calidad de la vida urbana en Latinoamérica, y, por ende, fueron causantes del declive del derecho a la ciudad en San José. Ciudad Alterna es un grupo de arquitectos, que busca incentivar un pensamiento crítico, con respecto a las actuales dinámicas urbanas deshumanizadoras, a través de la acción desobediente que plantea el urbanismo táctico, el marketing de guerrilla y la intervención urbana a pequeña escala. La concientización sobre las posibilidades que ofrecen estas herramientas para el reclamo del derecho a la ciudad supone una democracia directa donde la persona habitante se involucre de forma activa en la búsqueda de soluciones con respecto a situaciones de lucha social, movilidad, uso y transformación del espacio público en la ciudad de San José, Costa Rica.
