Description
Summary:This article summarizes some of the central themes of my Ph. D. thesis entitled Taipa, canela preta, concreto. It details the technical approach applied to the restoration of ‘Casa do Bandeirante’, Sao Paulo city most well known ‘bandeirista’ dwelling. The investigation of the restoration work considers the context of the years 1950, when the state and the city ascended as prominent economies in the national scenery, and when the myth of the ‘bandeirante’ arose. Theorizing the genesis and the architecture of the ‘bandeirista’ house, the architect Luis Saia actively participated in the construction of the ‘bandeirista’ myth. Saia was a pioneer in the definition of criteria applied to the restoration of ‘bandeirista’ houses. Those criteria exercised influence on future generations of architects.
