This text is an updated excerpt of a master's thesis, Vilas paulistas do século XVI, submitted to University of São Paulo's College of Architecture and Urbanism. The research covers the settlement of the state of São Paulo during the 16th century and is based on sources of information and studies of the history of the urbanization in Brazil, particularly in the São Vicente region. The text seeks to illuminate the settlement process during that period, when most of the villages in the Santos coastal region and the São Paulo plateau were founded. O município de São Vicente, situado no litoral paulista, surgiu a partir da primeira vila fundada no Brasil, em 1532. O presente texto pretende resgatar alguns elementos remanescentes da época de sua fundação, buscando o devido reconhecimento como componentes de nosso patrimônio cultural, dignos de preservação. É um trecho atualizado da dissertação para obtenção do título de mestre, submetida à Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da USP, em 1996. Seu título: Vilas paulistas do século XVI. A pesquisa trata da ocupação do território paulista, ocorrida no século 16. Fundamenta-se em fontes de informação e estudos realizados sobre a história da urbanização do Brasil, particularmente, sobre a capitania de São Vicente. É uma procura do entendimento do processo de assentamento de núcleos de povoamento daquele período, onde os principais focos de ocupação se concentraram na Baixada Santista e no planalto paulista.
