With the help of these images, this research work describes the changes in land-use in the LMA, in each of the periods concerned. Each chapter of this paper corresponds to one of these years and starts with an overview of the general context (political, social and economic, and legal), followed by a descriptive interpretation of the urbanization processes themselves and the corresponding dynamics of the land-use changes. Each chapter then concludes by presenting findings provided by images and by the processes interpreted. It should be pointed out that these are mere initial findings in a research project which otherwise provides tools for understanding the urbanization process of the largest portuguese urban agglomeration. Com uma metodologia que se pretende rigorosa e precisa (cartografia sempre oficial, georeferenciação sistemática, verificação cruzada sempre que possível) o trabalho de pesquisa propõe a construção de imagens da ocupação urbana e rural dos territórios municipais da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa (AML) nas quatro datas possíveis: 1942, 1965, 1991 e 2001. Uma vez estabelecidas as imagens, tenta-se uma descrição da evolução do uso do solo na AML, em cada um dos períodos tipificados nessas datas. Em cada capítulo, correspondente a cada período, destaca-se primeiro o contexto geral (político, socio-económico, jurídico) em traços largos para, em seguida se descrever/interpretar os processos de urbanização propriamente ditos e a consequente evolução da dinâmica dos usos do solo. Em uma terceira parte apresenta-se o que foi possivel identificar, manifesto nas imagens dos processos esboçados no discurso interpretativo. Deve realçar-se que se trata aqui dos resultados iniciais e embrionários de uma pesquisa que, no entanto, manifesta grande potencial como geradora de instrumentos para a compreensão do processo de urbanização da maior aglomeração urbana portuguesa.
