description The increasing degradation of Latin American cities, in addition to the importance of urban environments and culture within the world context of globalization and postmodernism, has recently raised interest in analyses from different disciplines and has nourished current debates. In this process, the points of view of different experts, ranging from utopia to realism, are confronted. These positions are part of the approach of" order-disorder" dynamics and of the conflict of interests we see in cities. The critics of the utopian vision lead us to formulate new concepts and methods to interpret the urban processes within a realistic orientation, restoring real sense to the debates: to generate new knowledge that helps materialize the design of a fair city based on the social aspiration of a desirable and well-balanced urban environment. In this context and with this approach, the sociocultural urbanization concept is included in this investigation. It encourages research dedicated to discovering the cultural dimension of a city.

La fuerte degradación que presentan las ciudades en América Latina, ligada a la importancia que han adquirido los entornos urbanos y la cultura en el contexto mundial de la globalización y la posmodernidad, ha motivado el despliegue de análisis que atraviesan distintas disciplinas y nutren el debate contemporáneo. En este proceso se confrontan posturas que oscilan entre la utopía y el realismo, las cuales integran enfoques distintos sobre la dinámica orden-desorden y el conflicto de intereses que hay en la ciudad. La crítica a la visión utópica motiva la formulación de nuevos conceptos y métodos de interpretación de los procesos urbanos con una orientación realista y recupera el verdadero sentido del debate: generar conocimientos que contribuyan a materializar un proyecto de ciudad basado en la aspiración social de un entorno urbano deseable, equitativo y justo para los sectores populares. Es este contexto y con esa orientación se insertar la investigación y el concepto" urbanización sociocultural", destinado al conocimiento de la dimensión cultural de la ciudad. A intensa degradação apresentada pelas cidades na América Latina, ligada à importância adquirida pelos entornos urbanos e pela cultura no contexto mundial da globalização e da pós-modernidade, motivou o desenvolvimento de análises que abrangem diferentes disciplinas e alimentam o debate contemporâneo. Nesse processo, confrontam-se posturas as quais oscilam entre a utopia e o realismo, e que integram enfoques distintos sobre a dinâmica ordem-desordem e o conflito de interesses presente na cidade. A crítica à visão utópica motiva a formulação de novos conceitos e métodos de interpretação dos processos urbanos, com uma orientação realista e recupera o verdadeiro sentido do debate: gerar conhecimentos que contribuam para materializar um projeto de cidade baseado na aspiração social de um entorno urbano desejável, equitativo e justo para os setores populares.
