Summary:The author discusses the role of the architect as a coordinator of multidisciplinary building-design teams. This research covers the complexity of contemporary real-estate properties and the challenging management and coordination of the design process using teams consisting of members qualified in an increasing range of design specialties. This article consolidates a series of technical articles and a book chapter the author has co-written in the past five years. It also includes a large bibliographical review on the subject and considerable empirical evidence collected at several building companies and architecture and design coordination offices. The author describes design coordination activities and the architect's role and responsibility in design coordination. Finally, the author discusses the skills and training necessary for him.
