The article presents a historical revision of the sustainable development and the sustainable in the constructed environment. It describes the main concepts and practices for implantation of the sustainable in the civil construction. These concepts and practices are reviewed from the perspective of the dialectic method, the general theory of systems and the theories of creative processes. These concepts are also analyzed from the perspective of quality management. The article proposes a model based on the dialectic, in which sustainability is considered an open system and a search inventive. The implantation of the sustainable in projects, companies and design processes are considered as main strategy. A vertical insertion of the sustainable in the process is proposal. In this vertical insertion, the sustainable is presents in all the phases and activities of the process. The model is organized to promote the external creative solutions to the process, through the promotion of research centers. Tools of selection of possibilities and practical are suggested, considering the characteristic dialectics proposals. The article concludes that sustainable is a cultural change in the processes, practical and management current. O artigo faz uma revisão histórica do desenvolvimento sustentável e da sustentabilidade no ambiente construído e descreve os principais conceitos e práticas que vem sendo adotadas para implantação da sustentabilidade na construção civil. Estes conceitos e práticas são revistos utilizando como método de análise a dialética, a teoria geral de sistemas e teorias de processos criativos. Os conceitos são também analisados sob a perspectiva das práticas da gestão pela qualidade. O artigo propõe um modelo baseado na dialética, no qual a sustentabilidade é considerada um sistema aberto e uma busca inventiva. A implantação da sustentabilidade nos empreendimentos, empresas e processos de projetos são consideradas estratégias fundamentais. É proposta uma inserção vertical da sustentabilidade no processo, de modo que esta se apresente em todas as fases, atividades e estrutura do mesmo. O modelo é organizado de modo promover a soluções criativas externas ao processo, através da promoção de centros de pesquisas. São sugeridas ferramentas de seleção de possibilidades e práticas, considerando as características dialéticas propostas. O artigo conclui que sustentabilidade se apresenta como uma mudança cultural nos processos, práticas e gestão atuais. Universidade de São Paulo.
