The methodology applied consisted in photographic surveys and questionnaire applications with residents from nine apartment buildings in the city of Maceio who made up the verandah closure, focusing the handling of door and windows and on the perception of the natural ventilation on summertime and wintertime. It was claimed that the excessive ventilation and the unwished incidence of rain as the major environmental reasons to verandahs closure. It was verified that after the closure, the residents started to utilize it more frequently, keeping the original usage or modifying it. This paper contributes to understand the residents’ reasons, perceptions and choices about the verandahs, creating the conception of new spaces that more and more focus their needs, bringing up elements of projects to architects and project designers. O propósito do presente artigo é verificar os motivos do fechamento das varandas de apartamentos, tendência observada principalmente nas cidades litorâneas, bem como os novos usos destinados aos espaços e os materiais e tipologias utilizados no fechamento. Método de pesquisa/Abordagens: A metodologia utilizada consistiu em levantamento fotográfico e aplicação de questionários e entrevistas com os usuários de nove apartamentos de edifícios em altura da cidade de Maceió/AL que realizaram o fechamento da varanda, com foco no padrão de uso das esquadrias e na percepção de ventilação natural, no período de verão e inverno. Resultados: Constataram-se a excessiva ventilação e a incidência indesejável de chuvas como os principais motivos ambientais para o fechamento das varandas; que levavam à subutilização do espaço pelos usuários. Verificou-se que após o fechamento, os usuários passaram a utilizá-la com mais freqüência, mantendo o uso original ou modificando-o. Contribuições/Originalidade: A contribuição do trabalho dá-se no entendimento das razões, percepções e escolhas dos usuários das varandas, visando a concepção de novos espaços, que, cada vez mais, atendam às suas necessidades, gerando subsídios de projetos para arquitetos e projetistas.
