Artistas, cientistas e viajantes que percorreram o Brasil na primeira metade do século 19 conformaram um significativo conjunto de representações sobre o território, em sua dimensão não somente objetiva e científica, mas também sensível e poética. Tendo em vista o pensamento do final do século 18 – a partir de Goethe, Humboldt e Kant – e elementos da obra dos naturalistas Carl Friedrich von Martius e Johann Baptist von Spix, este artigo versa a respeito da centralidade da paisagem na apreensão estética da natureza, reconhecendo, na origem da experiência paisagística, uma maneira de mediar de modo sensível a primordial relação do homem com o mundo. Artistas, científicos y viajeros que recorrieron por el Brasil en la primera mitad del siglo 19, conformaron un conjunto significativo de representaciones del territorio en su dimensión no sólo objetiva y científica, sino también sensible y poética. Dado el pensamiento al final del siglo 18 – a partir de Goethe, Humboldt y Kant – y elementos de la obra de los naturalistas Carl Friedrich von Martius y Johann Baptist von Spix, este artículo trata acerca de la centralidad del paisaje en la aprehensión estética de la naturaleza, reconociendo en el origen de la experiencia del paisaje una manera de mediar de modo sensible la primordial relación del hombre para el mundo. Artists, scientists and travelers who visited Brazil in the first half of the nineteenth century conformed a significant set of representations about the territory not only in an objective and a scientific meaning, but also sensitive and poetic. Considering the thought of the late eighteenth century – in view of Goethe, Humboldt and Kant – and elements of the work of the naturalists Carl Friedrich von Martius and Johann Baptist von Spix, this article runs upon the centrality of landscape in the aesthetic apprehension of nature, recognizing, in the origin of the landscape experience, a way to mediate sensibly the primary connection of the man with the world.
