From there I have decided to explore the bases of the particular relationship between the suburbs and the picturesque aesthetics. Along the next lines, I will set the principles of the Garden City, and it´s transformation into the concept of Garden Suburb after the settlement of the first garden city, by the architects Raymond Unwin and Barry Parker. The second part of the work deals with a varie ty of historiographic sources –Art History ; Architecture Studies and Urban History– in relation with the priority themes concerning the modern suburbs, Garden City, Garden Suburbs and Picturesque. I will try to set a path from the theories built by historians at the early years of the XXth century, to the latest reviews introduced in this area of studies. A partir de un interés particular en el estudio de la formación del suburbio romántico en Argentina, surge la necesidad de explorar las bases de una relación incuestionable que se establece actualmente entre la imagen del suburbio de clase media y las lógicas del diseño pintoresco. Se señalan para ello los principales lineamientos de la “ciudad jardín”, las primeras materializaciones del modelo howardiano y su transformación en el concepto de suburbio jardín en relación con las intervenciones de los arquitectos Unwin y Parker. Una segunda parte del trabajo traza un panorama sobre el tratamiento historiográfico que las diferentes disciplinas –la historia del arte, la historia de la arquitectura y la historia urbana– han hecho en relación con los núcleos temáticos que consideramos, confluyen en la formación del espacio suburbano moderno: ciudad jardín, suburbio jardín y pintoresquismo. Se intentará establecer un recorrido por las principales líneas de investigación que a lo largo del siglo XX han contribuido a formar o deformar los conceptos en discusión, para finalizar señalando el camino que han tomado los últimos trabajos presentados en el área.
