La orientación y la forma expansiva en que se desarrollan los usos del suelo de las áreas metropolitanas, en virtud del incremento en la tasa de crecimiento de pobladores, representa un reto para los gobiernos locales y estatales latinoamericanos, sobre todo si se considera lo laxo en los controles de planeación existentes; por esta razón es de importancia fundamental avanzar en el conocimiento de los procesos metodológicos que auxilien en la planeación del sitio.
