Does it really exists an object of particular and pre-established study? Which are the components, the limits and the structures of functioning of this object of reference? The text is a presentation of the theoretically empirical aspects related to the identification of an object of pertinent study for the investigation of the contemporary Lima residential urbanism. Close to an evaluation of the situation of the Peruvian urban historiography recently dedicated to Lima; the notions of city and neighborhood turn into basic referents for the dentification of the different urbanistic traditions (state urbanism, private urbanism and urbanism of slums). The neighborhood in its urban dimension appears as the basic unit in order to historify. La definición y delimitación de un objeto de estudio para la investigación histórica del urbanismo residencial es una cuestión de permanente controversia. ¿Existe un objeto de estudio particular y preestablecido del mismo?, ¿cuáles son los componentes, los límites y las estructuras de funcionamiento de este objeto de referencia? El texto es una presentación de los aspectos teórico empíricos concernientes a la identificación de un objeto de estudio pertinente a la investigación de la urbanística residencial limeña contemporánea. Junto a una evaluación de la situación de la historiografía urbanística peruana reciente dedicada a Lima, las nociones de ciudad y barrio se convierten en referentes básicos para la identificación de las diferentes tradiciones urbanísticas (urbanismo estatal, urbanismo privado y urbanismo de barriadas). El barrio, en su dimensión urbanística, aparece como la unidad básica de historización.
