The article exposes clearly who it has been the evolution of the sense of the public space in the cities of the XIX and XX centuries and it proposes a reflection around its true meaning that is based on the rigorous study of the different manifestations that had had and as conclusion it outlines options that go in course with the current necessities, without leaving aside the picked up experiences, and that is an indispensable element in the construction of the architecture of the city again. Entender el espacio urbano es posible después de hacer una profunda reflexión sobre los significados que este ha tenido en el transcurso de la historia y como se ha desarrollado según la cultura y el contexto donde se ubica. El artículo expone claramente como ha sido la evolución del sentido del espacio público en las ciudades de los siglos XIX y XX y propone una reflexión en torno a su verdadero significado, que se base en el estudio riguroso de las diferentes manifestaciones que a tenido y que como conclusión plantee opciones que vayan acordes con las necesidades actuales, sin dejar de lado las experiencias recogidas, y que vuelva a ser un elemento indispensable en la construcción de la arquitectura de la ciudad.
